Federal-Public Lands Transportation Work at WTI

Transportation systems and services within and around federal lands and public lands (national parks, state recreation areas, etc.) face unique challenges.  They must provide safe and efficient access to the attractions of the public land unit, often for large numbers of tourists and other visitors.  At the same time, the agencies and staff that manage transportation within public land agencies must also preserve the scenery, nature, wildlife, and historical/cultural sites that visitors come to experience.

WTI researchers, working collaboratively across all program areas, develop and implement transportation solutions for public agencies that have responsibilities related to public land management, transportation, and resource protection.  At the federal level, this includes:

  • U.S. Department of Interior (DOI)
  • National Park Service (NPS)
  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
  • U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS)
  • U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR)
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)
  • U.S. Forest Service (USFWS)
  • U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)

In addition, WTI assists local, regional, and state agencies with their public lands management transportation challenges and solutions.
